Domaine Alary are at this 'wine-making' thing since 1692 so obviously know what they are doing!
La Gerbaude Rouge is their Cotes du Rhone Rouge and is a blend of Grenache, Syrah & Carignan. All the grapes in this Cotes du Rhone come from the Cru Classe region of Cairanne but from the younger vines (6-20 years old) so Jean Etienne Alary prefers to sell it as a Cotes du Rhone (although perfectly entitled if he wished to label as Cairanne)
They particularly target a lower than typical alcohol level (13.5%) for this wine as their intention is a big, soft , expressive wine that shows as soft and beautifully balanced. And balance s the whole point with Alary!
The nose is big and expressive, complex with dominant notes of red fruit (blackcurrant, strawberry) that expands in the mouth. The palate is smooth, round with a real sense of sweetness. Supported by fine tannins and a velvety mouth with a lot of persistence and volume. While a big wine, it is soft and beautifully balanced.
For the wine nerds: the Grenache and Carignan are vinified together and the Syrah vinified on it's own and then they blend later. The main reason is of course that the Syrah is picked much earlier than the Grenache etc!
Food pairing: This fruity and charming wine will perfectly pair with lamb chops, a sirloin of pork or beef ribs. A spinach/goat cheese tart will please the veggie.
Jean Etienne Alary loves Grenache and is a genius with that varietal. However their reputation was originally built on their Old Vine Syrah - make sure to check out the L'Estevenas Cairanne on this site!
