This RED Sancerre* (our White Sancerre can be viewed HERE) is 100% Pinot Noir from typical Sancerre vineyards of clay and limestone. While grown under organic principles, this vintage was the last before organic certification was granted - so it's pretty well organic without the tick!

Once the grapes reach the cellars, they undergo a pre-fermentation (to aid extraction of  colour and tannins) and after (first) fermentation, it is divided between stainless steel tanks and local oak barrels for the (second) malolactic fermentation, all done to extract the colours, tannins and intense aromas they are looking for. 

When we finally get our hands on the wine - good things come to those who wait - it shows with a charming clear and bright red ruby colour. It has a typical Pinot nose with notes of violet and spices. It opens up beautifully in the mouth - still violets and subtle spices but it's the warming (but not from alcohol, it's only 13%) and mouth filling flavours. While not technically a big wine, it is powerful and well-structured in the mouth, and finishes with flavours of red berries (raspberries & strawberries). it is quite Burgundian in style - a real happy surprise! 
This is the sort of Red wine that works really well with white meats, fish, charcuterie etc

All our wines from Jean Colin have a wax seal over the cork so they look great! But a tip! Don't try to cut the wax off - just screw your (quality) corkscrew/waiter's friend through the wax and into the cork - the wax will crack and fall off! Too much work if you try anything else!

*A popular enough option as a red wine especially in the summer, but we know a few shops who have given up stocking Red Sancerre as the customers keep bringing it back saying 'I thought Sancerre was white!' A little condescending to the customer perhaps (they may have been in a hurry or not wearing their reading glasses ...) but about 12% of Sancerre is Red wine (Pinot Noir) and up to 7% is Rosé (100% Pinot Noir) - depending on the vintage obviously. 
However, across the river in Pouilly, they can only make White Pouilly Fumé!  If they bother making red wine, it will not be called Pouilly Fumé Rouge!
