Article: When do we need a Magnum of wine?

When do we need a Magnum of wine?

We do get asked about Magnums of wine (but not that often) but let's be honest they do look great!

We asked our buddies in AI what they thought and he/she said Magnums were good for large dinner parties, aging fine wines or making a statement at celebrations.

This is all true (well done AI !) but there are always Caveats!  We still have Magnums of Vintage Port (Taylor's 1985 since you ask -  93 points Wine Spectator) and it has helped it's longevity by being in a magnum , but when do you open a magnum of Vintage Port?  You'd need some crowd!

A far better idea in our view is to buy a more 'normal' wine when you need more than a bottle - saves on the work also!
We like this approach and are encouraging it this summer (2026) by upgrading a bottle to a magnum when you buy one of our great Spanish wines!

This offer applies to
Nivarius N Tempranillo Blanco 2025, Rioja  €16.95
91 Points Decanter, 93 Points Vinous, 91 Points Penin

Trus Roble 2025, Ribera del Duero €19.50
Just released but 91 points Penin already

Nivarios Edicion Limitada 2019, Rioja   €24.00
95 Points Decanter, 94 Points Penin, 94 Points Tim Atkin
&
Proelio Vinedos Viejos (Garnacha) 2021, Rioja  €24.00
93 points Penin

As a final note, some bottles are just TOO big! We were asked when planning a function if we could pour a wine the customer had at home. It turned out to be a 'Super Fiasco' or 'damigiana' of cheap Italian wine - years old - that he just wanted to use up so he could make it a decoration or large floor vase.

Aside from the fact that it was too heavy to pour the wine from in the first place!
