Domaine Alary, Cairanne, Rhone Valley

With a history making wine in Cairanne, Southern Rhone, since 1692 the Alary family 'are' Cairanne. Denis was President of the local Wine group when it ascended to full Cru Classe, equal to Gigondas & Chateauneuf!
All Alary vineyards are in Cairanne. Their wines sold as Cotes du Rhone could technically be Cairanne but as normally younger vines etc, they choose to sell them as Cotes du Rhone.
About 7% (depending on the vintage) of all Southern Rhone wines are White, but white wines account for over 30% of Domaine Alary production. Jean Etienne, having taken over from his father Denis, believes this will increase even more - but the stars are still the big reds!
Jean Etienne believes mostly in balance - there is no sense having rich full flavours if the tannins and acidity are out of sync. Taste his wines and you will see what he means - they offer balance & richness but the finesse, aromatics and elegance shine through!

  • In 1953, Cairanne became one of the first villages allowed to add its name to the Côtes-du-Rhône label, formally becoming a "Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages" in 1967.
  • After decades of focusing on quality, Cairanne was elevated to a Cru of the Côtes-du-Rhône in 2016, recognizing its distinct terroir. This equates the quality of the wines from Cairanne with Vacqueyras, Gigondas & Chateauneuf-du-pape!  But at generally a better price!
