Nivarius Tempranillo Blanco 2025 Rioja DOC is a brilliant introduction to the wines of Palacios. Made with 100% Tempranillo Blanco from the only specialist white wine winery in Rioja (they do produce excellent red wines also, but from separate vineyards) on clay vineyards at an altitude between 550-700 metres (with a small layer of sand on the surface).
The Palacios project is really interesting (never mind the wines being fantastic) in that they sourced lots of small vineyards in high altitude areas to develop their wines, but then discovered old vines and also old grape varietals. They now produce wine from 70-90 year old vines that they have nurtured and invested in ( see their La Nevera Maturana Blanca or the Finca La Esperilla Field Blend)
This 2025 vintage Nivarius N shows up as a straw yellow colour and then opens big and fresh on the nose - intensity, and fresh citrus aromas. A big (fresh) and expressive mouthful on the palate which flows with restrained control into a long fresh fluid finish.

The Critics reviews for this new vintage of Nivarius are just starting to arrive!
91 points with Decanter !
93 points in Vinous - "it shows moderate freshness and mid-weight fruit. Its finish carries a
cream, gently savory tone that reflects the valley´s cooler, Atlantic-influenced profile.
Even better, it's also in bottles!
Pretty good for a wine at this price, eh!!
Tempranillo Blanco is a mutation of Tempranillo (red) and was only approved for use in DOC Rioja as recently as 2007.
While the vignerons are still 'learning' this varietal, it has some stand out attributes - fantastic acidity and aromas - which are frequently lacking in white Spanish wines from warmer areas.
I remember going to a tasting of wines from a large - and excellent - Penedes producer (whom I like a lot, not only for their wines, but also as they gave me 3 tickets for the Champions League Final in 1999 - the one were United scored twice in injury time) and our criticism of the whites at the time was 'lack of acidity' thus lack of freshness and clarity. The Palacios wines are the opposite - always fresh and always exciting.
