The Langhe is the wine region in Piedmont, home to the famous villages of Barbaresco and Barolo to name a couple of famous ones!
While Langhe is the region, Nebbiolo is THE grape!
This wine here offers aromas of violets and wild herbs and notes of tar. If left open for a while you will also get scents of red berry fruits and even tobacco.
While the heavy Nebbiolo hitters (Barolo & Barbaresco) require aging, this wine shows really well immediately with a persistent palate, light tannic notes complemented by the wood (1 year in older casks - only a small percentage of new oak). It finishes long and stimulating.
Trivia: Nebbiolo derives from the Italian for fog and earned it's name from the Autumn fogs that are common in this region. The fog settles in the numerous valleys and the better wines come from above the fog line - supposedly!

When our main course was served, the Trattore again paraded the truffle around but I declined it. He shouted into the Kitchen and his mother - the chef - came out. They pointed at me and laughed. Of course, everyone else then joined in....
I had the last laugh though - while they were laughing, I drank all the wine!
