Red wine for Christmas Dinner - The Times they are a changing ...
When we opened the first wine shop in 1986, everybody wanted Bordeaux reds to serve with Christmas Dinner - and we obliged by stocking a vast range.
But things change and as knowledge grew (including ours) there was a shift to other wines, in particular Grenache/Garnacha based wines, Tempranillo based wines and in some cases Syrah/Shiraz (more New World that Northern Rhone though!)
Unless your quality Bordeaux red is fully mature, the tannins can appear dry and astringent when paired with Turkey etc. That's not the case though with most Grenache/Garnacha and Tempranillo wines. The spiciness and relatively low acidity help to create a fresh fruity style
For example
Proelio Vinedos Viejos (Garnacha) 2019, Palacios, Rioja, Spain €24.00 is fresh and fruity on the palate and finishes elegant and long.
Cotes du Rhone 2023, Domaine de La Charbonniere, Rhone, France is a Grenache/Syrah blend that feels big and rich, but not heavy. It's soft spicy tannins are long and rewarding
Bourgogne Rouge, Cuvée Les Charmes de Daix, 2021, Domaine Thierry Mortet, Burgundy
It's hard to beat Pinot Noir though, and this wine from Mortet is deep, dense and brilliant - delicious and luscious and soft!
Puerto Rubio 2018 Single Vineyard, Palacios, Rioja €60.00pb is 100% Tempranillo and is modern and ripe, with a luxurious texture. 95 Points Tim Atkin, 95 Points Penin Guide, 95 points James Suckling.com.'
